The real blocker isn’t AI capability—it’s trust. Teams have tools; the challenge is trusting AI output without reviewing every line.
Software is the last major industry still hand-crafting every unit. Manufacturing solved this decades ago — not by removing mistakes, but by building quality into the process: sensors tolerances, automated inspection, kill switches. We need the same revolution.
The real blocker isn't AI capability — it's trust. Your team already has AI tools. The question is: "How do I trust what AI produces without reviewing every line?" The answer is the same one factories found: you don't inspect every piece — you engineer the process so defects can't ship.
Tests are your sensors. Feature flags are your kill switches. Observability is your production dashboard. Each engineering practice is a factory-floor mechanism that lets you safely increase AI autonomy — not a "nice to have."
The end state: spec in → verified, deployed code out. Engineers become supervisors who define correctness and monitor outcomes — exactly like maintenance engineers on a factory floor. Not watching every cycle, but intervening on exceptions.
